UK study visa applications have soared in 2025—even as post-study work rights tighten under new immigration rules. Between January and May 2025, 76,400 applicants sought student visas, marking a 29% increase from the same period in 2024.
Notably, May alone saw 18,500 applications, 19% more than the previous year. Although the UK’s academic intake peaks later in the year, this early growth is striking. These figures suggest student demand remains strong, even before the main enrollment season begins.
Stricter Rules for the Study Visa
Despite this study visa applications surge, the UK government is moving to reduce net migration. In May 2025, it announced cuts to the Graduate Route. The new policy reduces the post-study work period from two years to just 18 months. Additionally, it introduces higher English proficiency and financial requirements.
Moreover, students can no longer bring most dependants. Recruitment agencies now face stricter oversight. These measures aim to control abuse of the visa system and reduce long-term immigration.
Even so, these restrictions haven’t dampened student interest yet. In fact, the opposite seems true.
UK Still Attracts Talent
According to Ruth Arnold, Global External Relations Director at StudyGroup, the UK remains a trusted destination for study visa applications. She notes that despite new limits, students still value the UK’s quality education and global recognition.
Meanwhile, global competition has also shifted in the UK’s favor. Australia and Canada have adopted stricter visa policies. The US continues to face political unpredictability. Consequently, many students see the UK as the more stable choice.
Universities also welcome the rise in study visa applications. After suffering a dip in international student numbers during 2024, institutions face growing financial pressure. This new surge could offer some relief.
Study Visa Volatility
Nonetheless, challenges persist. The dependants ban already cut such visa applications by 80%. Some experts warn that the full impact of Graduate Route cuts may appear later.
Additionally, concerns around recruitment agents are growing. A number of agencies have been accused of misleading students. If left unchecked, this could damage trust and the UK’s reputation.
Furthermore, study visa policy volatility may push some applicants toward other countries in the long term.
Outlook for Study Visa Season
Looking ahead, the July–September study visa application peak season could break new records. These early trends point to strong demand. However, the true test will come when the new Graduate Route changes take effect.
Future data will show whether the current surge is sustainable or simply a pre-policy rush.
Finally, broader geopolitical and trade ties, such as a potential India–UK free trade agreement, may also influence student flows.
